SPECIAL AGREEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY JUSTICE COMMITTEES
A special agreement is signed between the crown prosecutor and the committees to divert offences. The members represent community values, and are recognized by the local band council.
JUSTICE UNT SERVICES DURING THE PROCESS
- Conflict resolution services to community members
- Healing or Talking circles
- Reintegration Circles
- Sentencing circles to assist judges in crafting appropriate sentences
- Gladue Reports to ensure judges have all appropriate information about an offender
- Diversion of youth and adult offenders from the courts into healing and treatment programs
- Community education in justice and justice-related matters
- Professional support services
- Community Justice Officer works with crown, from diverted cases
- Service and support to witnesses and victims during the whole duration of process
CORRECTIONS UNIT SERVICES DURING THE PROCESS
- Client signs CREE Consent Form — Agreement to work with the DOJCS
- Intake Assessment Form — to determine risks and needs
- Support references: psychologists, elder and counsellor in detention visits, ministers, spiritual guidance, support letters, treatment applications, community support
- Preliminary, bail and parole hearings support
- Support during prison transfers
- Follow-ups
- Correctional intervention and debriefing
- Professional support services
- Community Reintegration Officer support in reintegration, community programs, and record suspension program
THE USE OF STATE-OF-THE-ART VIDEO CONFERENCING 
- VC can be used for lawyers to conference with their clients before a court date
- VC can be used for the procedure of bail hearing
- VC can be used in trial for witnesses in other communities or locations
- VC can be used to help coordinate interviews to prepare the Gladue Reports, reducing travel
- VC can also be used for special hearings on keeping drivers’ licenses for work
- VC can be used for families to visit offenders while still in detention, reducing hardship
- VC can be used post-detention for mental health sessions with professionals
- VC can be used for special hearings when a client breaches their conditions
- VC can be used in Youth Protection trials
